What's New in Basic Skills

March into April: MIS

It was so nice to see you at March conferences!

3rd Grade: Our third grade language arts group continues to work through Step 3 of the Wilson Reading System.  Students have been working on dividing multisyllabic words for reading and spelling. Work with isolated syllables on “syllable frames” builds to words, wordlists, sentences, and passages in each lesson.  Two BSI sessions equals one Wilson Reading System lesson.  The students are applying what they learn to the reading of fluency passages.

3rd Grade Math: Third grade math students have been practicing mixed skills from the school year such as multiplication, its application to area, perimeter, regrouping to subtract, and finding equivalent fractions using fraction bars. They are continuing their personalized pathway work on their iReady accounts.

4th Grade LA: Our 4th grade readers have completed ten of fourteen units in the Wilson Just Words decoding and spelling program. They are currently reviewing spelling options for vowel team sounds. They continue to practice fourth grade fluency passages.

4th Grade Math:  Students put lots of effort into regrouping to subtract mixed numbers (fractions) with common denominators. They are continuing their personalized pathway work on their iReady accounts.

5th Grade LA: Our 5th grade readers are working through the final unit of the Wilson Just Words decoding and spelling program. This final unit is a review of all program concepts. They are also working on their personalized pathways in the iReady program, specifically in comprehension and vocabulary.

5th Grade Math: Our sessions have been centered around support of in-class lesson topics.  Earlier in March, students used powers of ten (exponents) to multiply and divide decimals. By the end of the month, they were multiplying and dividing decimals. They continue to work through their personalized pathways in their iReady accounts.
