March Curriculum Update

What are we learning in March?

Math- We are wrapping up unit 5 about fraction operations and estimating angles. Next, students are learning all about division. We are beginning to work on our division fact fluency, and practicing extended division facts. We are also learning how to divide big numbers with the partial quotients strategy. Finally, we are learning all the different ways to interpret remainders. We are also learning how to measure angles with a protractor.

Reading- As our biography unit wraps up with our wax museum celebration on March 5, we will be onto our next reading unit, Historical Fiction. Students will be in book clubs reading novels focused on a period in history. They will be also reading our class mentor novel, Number the Stars. Book club books include Abby Takes a Stand (civil rights movement), Sarah, Plain, and Tall (life on the frontier), and I, Survived the American Revolution.

Writing- Students are hard at work on informational books. We are learning how to research information, write topic sentences,  organize supporting chapters, apply nonfiction craft techniques, and include nonfiction text features.

Science- We are wrapping up our Soils, Rocks, and Landforms unit by studying rapid changes like Earthquakes and Landslides, and fossils.

Social Studies- This trimester we are learning all about New Jersey. Students will study New Jersey’s geography, history, economic concepts, and civics. At the end of the unit, students will be treated to seeing New Jersey government in action by going on a field trip to our State House.
