November Curriculum Update

Reading- This month our focus is on the nonfiction genre. We are learning different text structures that nonfiction writers use to teach information- cause/effect, compare/contrast, problem/solution, main idea, and sequential. We are also learning about hybrid nonfiction texts that use narrative. We will also begin our natural disaster group research project.
Writing- Students are learning to be essayists. We are learning about the 5 paragraph essay structure. We are learning to support our thesis statements with mini stories, facts, and examples. Students will be publishing their essays on Google Classroom.
Math- We start the month wrapping up chapter 2 with a focus on symmetry and input/output table patterns. In chapter 3, we are learning all about Fractions. We are learning about equal shares in the context of word problems. We are also learning how to find equivalent fractions. As we study fractions, we are continuing to practice our multiplication facts. Please encourage at home practice!
Science- Our classroom is thriving with living organisms! We have been observing the mealworm life cycle. Also we are observing changes in our plant experiment on water tolerance. We are learning about ecosystems, food chains, and human impact on the world's ecosystems.
